Category:1974 non-fiction books Category:MIT Press books Category:Games and sports Category:Game theory Category:Non-fiction books about gamesThe invention relates to a process for the preparation of esters of dicarboxylic acids in which one or more oxo compounds are added to an esterification mixture in which a carboxylic acid is esterified with one or more alcohols, where an esterification catalyst is present in said esterification mixture. The invention further relates to esters prepared in said process. The esters prepared by the process of the invention are suitable for preparing acid esters, for instance for preparing polyesters. The preparation of acid esters from carboxylic acids and alcohols is typically carried out in a single step in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is used in order to improve the yield and reduce the formation of by-products. In the preparation of polyesters, one of the carboxylic acids is usually polyfunctional and/or contains functional groups which are difficult to esterify, for instance hydroxyl groups. U.S. Pat. No. 6,498,230, for instance, describes a process for the preparation of esters of dicarboxylic acids in which oxo compounds are added to the esterification mixture in the presence of an acid catalyst in order to prepare the esters. This process requires large amounts of acid and it is also disadvantageous that large amounts of water are formed. The process of the invention is characterized in that one or more oxo compounds are added to an esterification mixture in which a carboxylic acid is esterified with one or more alcohols, and that an esterification catalyst is present in said esterification mixture. The addition of one or more oxo compounds to the esterification mixture can be performed in an inert gas environment. In particular, it can be performed in an environment in which the esterification is performed in the presence of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, argon or helium. The process of the invention is particularly suitable for preparing esters of dicarboxylic acids in which the carboxylic acid contains one or more functional groups which are difficult to esterify, such as hydroxyl groups. The invention further relates to esters prepared in said process. The esters prepared by the process of be359ba680
