KickassTorrents is a torrent search engine which searches for torrent files and magnet links from other torrent sites, providing a directory of all the latest releases with reviews and ratings from users. It also provides several useful RSS feeds to its users. In 2015, KickassTorrents migrated to a new domain name: www.katcr.co Source: https://kickasstorrents. com/ KickassTorrents became notable in the media in 2013 after its operators were arrested by European police. IP-addresses belonging to the site were evidence used in court case against several individuals accused of pirating media. These arrests triggered widespread backlash over the site's content policies. The site was temporarily shut down by Dutch authorities for alleged copyright violations until it was reinstated. The shutdown also coincided with a difficult period for KickassTorrents, which turned to its users and launched a fundraising campaign through an appeal on Twitter. Both the site and its users were criticised by some commentators as being unrepresentative of the true nature of piracy, as cyberlockers such as ExtraTorrent and The Pirate Bay continue to serve as the primary source for downloading copyrighted materials, despite numerous lawsuits and criticism from both users and content providers.KickassTorrents was shut down on 4 May 2017 by Ira Rothken, a former executive at Kadena Inc, which operates both Katcr.co domain name. The shutdown also coincided with two other major sites being shut down at the time: Torrentz.eu (shutdown) changed ownership to part of Isohunt Holding Inc., who operate several other torrent related websites under the TorrentHound brand; Torrentz. ch, an alternative of Torrentz.eu, closed voluntarily. On top of the above shutdowns there were a number of domain name seizures which meant further sites were no longer active:The combined effect of these shutdowns led to a majority of active torrent sites being down or offline for weeks leading to an almost 50% loss in overall global traffic. In 2017, KickassTorrents became one of the most prominent targets for anti-piracy groups such as the MPAA, RIAA and FACT. In May 2017, several movie distributors filed civil lawsuits against KickassTorrents as well as the site's alleged founders Artem Vaulin and Ira Rothken. The claims in these lawsuits are similar to earlier cases filed by the MPAA against The Pirate Bay, Torrentz.eu, TorrentHound and IsoHunt. KickassTorrents is accused of having "harvested" torrent metadata from other sites such as The Pirate Bay and used it to add new features such as seedboxes and extra search functionality. This played a large part in the site's demise. Additionally, several anti-piracy groups such as the MPAA and FACT further contributed to its closure by refusing to remove it from their blacklists and actively trying to shut down proxy sites which were still serving it at the time of its permanent shutdown. cfa1e77820
